The project is multistranded with the principal objective to explore how creative dance activity supported by digital tools can have a positive impact on improving the quality of life (QOL) of individuals with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). Children and adults with PIMD remain “among the most marginalized people in society” (Pawlyn & Carnaby, 2009) and therefore exploring how dance activity can aid to lessen marginalization is a central aim. Another aim of the project is to draw awareness to the lack of visibility of this group within the arts sector in Puerto Rico. In stark contrast to the international dance sector where since the 1980s dance has seen a growth in mixed-ability/ inclusive dance projects and companies, no such work exists on the island. The proposed project and its activities is a significant first to begin to generate a change in the dance sector and to use dance activity as an important tool to make Puerto Rican society more inclusive and diverse.
